War Story:
2 Nov 69 single ship mission originating from Bien Hoa Special Forces compound, 5th SFG. A/C was directed to overfly a group of 8-10 hatched huts at coordinates XT320090 in Nau Nghia Province, III CTZ. While approaching the area of the huts at 90 knots and 300 feet, the hinged thatched roof on the huts swung open from the center to reveal .51 cal machine gun platforms. Upon taking fire, WO Logan initiated a hard left turn and dropped altitude to less than 100 feet. Once established on a course of 090 degrees, A/C Holzman took control of the aircraft for the flight to Cu Chi while WO Logan established radio contact with ground troops in the area. The aircraft landed at Cu Chi medevac pad within 10 minutes of receiving fire. SP4 Vollmer received wounds from .51 cal round and did not survive. The two Special Forces members were not injured. A/C Holzman received minor wounds and was treated at Cu Chi 25th Medical detachment. WO Logan received minor superficial lacerations from exploding plexiglass. SP4 Charles Portman was not injured.. The aircraft was a total loss with over 50 bullet holes impacting the blade grip reservoirs, blades, cockpit area, driveshaft and oil tank.
