Accident Summary:

 THE 326TH MEDICAL BATTALION RECEIVED A REQUEST FOR AN URGENT MEDICAL EVACUATION ON 2 OCTOBER 1970 AT 0110 HOURS. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER CHECKED PHU BAI WEATHER CONDITIONS AND DETERMINED THAT THE WEATHER WAS FAVORABLE FOR DEPARTURE. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED CAMP EAGLE AT 0125 HOURS. ENROUTE TO THE PICK-UP SITE. THE FLIGHT PARALLELED HIGHWAY 1. APPROXIMATELY EIGHT (8) STATUTE MILES SOUTH OF HUE PHU BAI AIRFIELD THE CEILING STARTED TO LOWER AND THE VISIBILITY WAS REDUCING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING AT TWO HUNDRED (200) FEET AND FORTY (40) KNOTS WHEN SUDDENLY INADVERTANT IFR CONDITIONS WERE ENCOUNTERED. A LEFT TURN WAS INITIATED AND THE PILOT RADIOED TO DUSTOFF CONTROL OF HIS INTENTION TO RETURN. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE WATER IN A STEEP BANK. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN AN INVERTED POSITION AND SEPARATED INTO THREE SECTIONS: VERTICAL FIN, TAILBOOM; WITH ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION AND ROTOR BLADES; AND THE COCKPIT. THE AIRCRAFT SANK IMMEDIATELY UPON IMPACT.\\
