Accident Summary:

 AT 1730 HOURS, 7 MARCH 1971, AIRCRAFT ^69-16438^ AN AH-1G DEPARTED THE ^F TROOP, 8TH CAVALRY^ AREA IN QUANG TRI FOR A VISUAL RECONNAISSANCE MISSION SUPPORT OF ^C COMPANY^ ^2ND BATTALION^ ^502D INFANTRY^ 101ST AIRBORNE DIVION.^ AFTER APPROXIMATELY ONE(1) HOUR OF NORMAL VISUAL RECONNAISSANCE, AIRCRAFT ^69-16438^ EXPERIENCED A MAIN ROTOR HUB ASSEMBLY SEPARATION AT AN ALTIDUDE OF 700 FEET MSL. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUN AT AN ANGLE OF APPROXIMATLY 90 DEGREES TO THE SLOPE OF THE TERRAIN, HEADING APPROXIMATELY 270 DEGREES. IT THEN EXPERIENCED POST CRASH FIRE AND EXPLOSION FROM UNEXPENDED FUEL AND ORDANCE.\\
