for Republican Youth

For date 620408

Republican Youth was a Civilian Irregular Defense Group unit
Operation THAI PHIEN
Quang Nam Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, An Chau
Description: On 4 April, a force of 31 Republican Youth took up positions near the hamel of An Chau, about 12 miles from Da Nang. They were escorted by four SF trainers and an interpreter. The 3d Co, 7th VC Bn attacked their site at 0700H on 8 April. The three assaults carried the field and the four Americans were captured, one was WIA. A little later, the VC grew impatient with the wounded Americans who could not keep up with the withdrawal and two were shot in the head. When helicopters were heard overhead, the last two SF tried to slow down the retreat and cause confusion. The helicopters were unable to locate the VC because of heavy clouds. Operation THAI PHIEN was launched three days later to rescue the captives. On 1 May the VC released the two SF NCOs.
