Description: Ten CH-21s from the 93rd escorted by five UH-1Bs from the UTT staged from Tan Hiep to insert 7th ARVN Inf Div elements into an area that proved to be the "home town" for a well trained and equipted reinforced VC battalion. The VC "stood and fought" rather than withdraw. During the fourth lift, one CH-21 was shot down on the LZ and a second, that tried to rescue the crew of the first, was also shot down. A third had to make a forced landing prior to reaching Tan Hiep. Only two of the seven remaining were flyable after inspection at Tan Hiep. Later in the day another CH-21 was shot up while attempting a medevac of the downed crews and was forced down less than a mile from the LZ. The air crews were eventually picked up by ARVN in armored personnel carriers and taken to a secure area where they were transfered to helicopters. SGT William L. Deal of the UTT died before he could be rescued and five others from the 93rd were wounded.
