CIDG

For date 631123

CIDG was a Civilian Irregular Defense Group unit
Hau Nghia Province, III Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Hiep Hoa
Description: A-21 Det of the 5th SF Group had been stationed at this camp since July. The local population was hostile and even the near-by friendly units did not provide support when the VC attacked early in the morning. The defenses were poor even by the standards of the period. Post battle investigations revealed heavy VC influtration and treachery from the several levels. Part of the strike force, the SF and LLBD leadership departed on patrol on the 23rd. A force of 4 SF, 9 LLDB, and 206 strikers were in the camp. Only part of the SF leadership and a few strike force soldiers were able to escape. The loss of personnel and equipment was high. Four SF NCOs were taken prisoner. One, SFC Camacho, would escape from the VC on 13 July 1965. The CIDG had 41 KIA and 120 WIA, the LLDB had 4 MIAs and the stikers had 28 MIAs. Other than 7 VC bodies left behind, their losses were unknown.
Comments: SFC Camacho, Isaac; POW; ;
