Operation PROJECT DELTA
South Vietnam
Description: Project DELTA operated country-wide under the direction of MACV as approved by the South Vietnamese Joint General Staff. Det B-52 was created to provide a control headquarters during June, 1965. During the war, Det B-52 ranged throughtout South Vietnam and conducted secret, long-range reconnaissance into VC sactuaries, collected intelligence for tactical or strategic exploitation, planned and directed airstrikes on normally inaccessible targets, made bomb assessment surveys in enemy-controlled areas, used reconnaissance-in-force missions against concealed NVA/VC positions, executed hunter-killed missions at night by employing airborne and starlite sniperscopes, recovered allied prisoners, captured NVA or VC personnel for intelligence purposes, rescued downed aircraft crews, employed wiretap methods on NVA/VC communications lines, mined transportation routes, misled enemy counterintelligence with deception missions or dummy infiltrations, channeled NVA/VC personnel into targeted zones with the assistance of harassing gas and smoke agents, performed psychological warfare operation, flew airborne personnel detector missions, and conducted extensive photo reconnaissance. On 30 June 1970, Project DELTA ceased all tactical operations.
