Description: The Viet Cong blow up an American enlisted men's billet in Qui Nhon killing 23 and wounding 21 U.S. soldiers. The IN MEMORIAM ceremony on 10 Feb 2000 at the US Army Transportation Museum at Ft. Eustis, VA commerated the members of the 140th Transportation Detachment (CHFM) killed in this attack. An edited extract from the ceremony's handout reads as follows: On Feb 10, 1965, 21 soldiers of the 140th Transportation Detachment (Cargo Helicopter Field Maintenance) were killed when Viet Cong sappers blew up their barracks in Qui Nhon, Vietnam. Their barracks was in the Viet Cuong Hotel, a four-story hotel leased by the U.S. Government in the port city of Qui Nhon. This tragedy, in which nearly half of the unit was killed or injured, was one of the worst losses of American lives experienced in a single incident in the war, for the Army and the Transportation Corps. The soldiers killed in this attack were: SP5 Alexandex, SP5 Anderson, PFC Bays, SP4 Belcher, PFC Betz, SP5 Coleman, SP5 Clayton, SP5 Kelley, PFC Ferris, PFC McClanahan, PFC Lawson, SP5 Mosier, PFC Rickhard, SP5 Rowley, SP5 Schultz, SP4 Simon, SP4 Summers, SSG Valkos, PFC Waters, SP4 Wilson, and PFC Wynn. The 140th Transportation Detachment (CHFM) provided aircraft field maintenance support for, and was deployed to Vietnam with the 8th Transportation Company (Light Helicopter) (H-21) in Dec 1961. These units, along with the 57th Transportation Company (Light Helicopter) and the 98th Transportation Detachment, were the first U.S. Army helicopter units to arrive in Vietnam.
