Location, Phu Cu Pass
Description: Early in the morning a VC force overran the Regional Force Company guarding the Phu Cu Pass on Highway 1. The SF A-321 Det C.O. boarded a helicopter to retrieve casualties at 1045H and were waved onto the helipad by soldiers dressed in friendly uniforms. As the helicopter touched down, an SF SGT and his interpreter leaped out but were suddenly hit with automatic weapons fire which also wounded the crew chief and the SF CO. The helicopter was able to escape but the SF SGT was killed later that afternoon.
