Description: MAJ Beckwith of Project DELTA and COL William McKean, CO of the 5th SF Group, used a 52nd CAB Huey to locate their insertion LZ. On the way back to Holloway, an escorting gunship threw a rotor bland and crashed killing all four crewmen. Two companies from the 91st ARVN Airborne Rangers attached to Project DELTA helicoptered into an LZ about 4 1/2 miles from Plei Me early in the morning. They used Hueys from the 52nd CAB and UH-34s from HMM-363. The airlift of 150 Vietnamese and 15 Americans was completed at 1000H without incident. By taking a circuitous route, they avoided NVA ambushes and waited outside the camp that night.
