Description: The A Company, 1st Aviation Battalion unit history states that about mid-morning, four of their UH-1B's were dispatched to escort a VNAF CH-34 in a rescue attempt for a downed A1E pilot. The CH-34 did not attempt the pilot pickup because of the ground fire in the area. 1LT Edward T. Pledger salvoed the rockets from the armed helicopter he was flying and accomplished the pick-up. Later in the day a second rescue attempt fwas made for anther downed USAF pilot in the vicinity of Plei Me. This rescue attempt had to be aborted due to heavy automatic weapons ground fire and darkness.
