173 ABN was a US Army unit
1/503 ABN was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Operation HUMP
Bien Hoa Province, III Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Hill 65
Description: As C/1/503d moved west from its night laager site toward Hill 65 it made contact with a large enemy force which started to envelop this company. B/1/503d moved up to secure C Company's flanks and found itself in a desperate fight. A Company moved against the enemy's left flank as the 503d was now locked in battle with the Q-761 NVA Regt. The enemy 'hugged' the American units to minimize the effect of supporting arms. Just after noon, B and C Companies were able to reconsolidate their lines; then the enemy assaulted the American lines several times but the Americans held. By late afternoon the battle was over as the enemy withdrew leaving 403 KIA on the battlefield. The 173d lost 48 KIAs on this date which was by far its highest lost date since arriving in Vietnam.
