Description: At 0900H the 2/5th Cav started out of LZ X-Ray toward LZ Columbus and the 2/7th Cav followed them. At 1138H the 2/5th Cav reached LZ Columbus and received a hot meal. At 1058 the 2/5th Cav turned north toward the clearing that had been designated LZ Albany. At 1157H the lead element of 2/7th Cav captured 2 NVA about 100 yards from Albany. At 1315H they were attacked by the newly arrived 8/66th and the understrength 1/33rd and HQ elements of the 3/33rd NVA Regts. By the time the battle ended in the predawn darkness the next morning 155 Americans would be dead and another 124 wounded. It was called the most savage one-day battle of the Vietnam War.
