Operation HARVEST MOON
Quang Nam Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Que Son Valley
Description: This was an American Search and Destroy operation that complimented the ARVN LIEN KET-18 and was meant to prevent the NVS from overrunning the Que Son Valley and take the ARVN garrisons at Viet An and Que Son. Casualties: US - 51 KIA, 256 WIA, 1 MIA; ARVN - 90 KIA, 141 WIA, 91 MIA; NVA/VC - 407 KIA, 33 POWs. Intelligence indicated that after Hiep Duc was abandoned, the enemy force moved north and east into the Que Son Valley. III MAF was directed to conduct search and destroy operations to prevent the enemy's growing control over this area. Joint USMC meetings with I Corps resulted in the agreement to launch HARVEST MOON/LIEN KET-18.
