2/1 MARINES was a US Marine Corps unit
Primary service involved, US Marine Corps
Operation HARVEST MOON
Quang Tin Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Thang Binh
Description: The offical USMC history states that TF DELTA directed the 2/7th Marines to drive east and the 3/3d Marines to the northwest to compress the enemy. The southern escape was closed when HMM-261 inserted the SLF battalion, 2/1st Marines, into the area.
At 1100, HMM-261 landed F/2/1st Marines in a zone near Cam La. This landing came under heavy 12.7mm fire from emplacements on Hill 407. CO Yunck, the 1st MAW G-3 remembers: "We thought the LZ was far enough from the hill to the south to nullify effective fire from that distance." Flying a UH-1E over the zone, he was wounded by a 12.7mm round. MAJ Kuykendall, the co-pilot, took control for the aircraft and the operation. Company G/2/1st Marines was inserted further west.
