operation report information
for 3 BDE 1 CAV

For date 660211

3 BDE 1 CAV was a US Army unit
Operation MASHER
South Vietnam
Description: Phase IV of operation MASHER began as the 3rd Bde, 1st Cav assaulted the enemy base itself in an area called the "Eagle's Claw" or the "Crow's Foot". It was a series of valleys southwest of Bong Son that branch out from the Son Long River and the Kim Son Valleys much like the toes on the foot on a crow. This resemblance was very noticeable from the air and can easily be seen on tactical maps. The famous LZ BIRD was established by a loop in the river, a complete U shape. The top part of the U, to the north, included a small rise in elevation. Because of its central location, natural defenses, and the availability of water, it would be occupied for many months to come.
