Operation NEW YORK
Thua Thien Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, east of Phu Bai
Description: This was a sweep operation is conducted by a multi-company US Marine force about 12 miles southeast of Hue in Thua Thein Province and then on the Phu Thu Peninsula east of Phu Bai. A reinforced Marine infantry battalion and HMM-361 guarded the Phu Bai airfield as the northern most USMC base area. The operation started when the CG of the ARVN 1st Div asked for the Marines to sweep an area as part of the ARVN operation LAM SON 234. It began when two companies moved by trucks up Route 1 to Pho Lai and HMM-361 helilifted another company into positions to the east near Quang Dien. They did not make contact with any enemy units and returned to Phu Bai.

Soon after the Marines involved in operation NEW YORK returned to Phu Bai, the 1st ARVN Div asked them to help an ARVN Bn that had engaged the 810th VC Bn just east of Phu Bai in the Phu Thu Peninsula. Starting at 2100 on the 27th until 0200 on the 28th, HMM-163 lifted three Marine companies into several zones on the peninsula. The ARVN provided the blocking force and the Marines attacked the VC. By the time NEW YORK ended on Mar 6, the Marines had killed 120 VC, captured 7 more and seized 69 weapons while suffering 17 US KIA and 37 WIA.
