Operation HAWTHORNE
South Vietnam
Description: As part of operation HAWTHORNE and part of a two battalion effort around hill 1073 northeast of Dak To, C/2/502 Inf made heavy contact with elements of the NVA 24th Regt. This was the famous battle where CPT William S. Carpenter, Jr. called in napalm drops on his own position. These airstrikes stopped the enemy and allowed the Americans to regroup. It would be a few more days before the ground units could move to LZ where the helicopters could lift out their dead and wounded. The jungle vegetation and enemy fire forced the helicopter crews to go many extra miles to help the ground units. Night resupply missions proved especially successful. HMM-164 helped extract these units.
