Operation EL PASO II
South Vietnam
Description: During EL PASO II, the 271st VC Regiment ambushed B and C/1/4th Cav was they were working to insert an ALVB over a destroy brigde. The jungle ran up to both sides of the road and B Troop was seriously hit. A C Troop tank manned by several replacement crews ultimately proved enough fire power for C Troop to join the rest of B Troop. D Troop supported its sister troops. 2/18th Inf was lifted in supported by Huey and CH-47 gunships. The medevac helicopters were very busy this day. Finally the 1st Inf Div units broke the ambush and supported with air and artillery killed 270 VC, captured 15 plus 23 crew-served weapons. The CG reported: "This was a complete surprise ... the U.S. forces nearly lost this battle. Air superiority proved to be the deciding factor, inflicting severe losses on the enemy."
