Operation PRAIRIE I
Quang Tri Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Gio Linh
Description: The goal of operation PRAIRIE was to determine the extent of the NVA forces in the Gio Linh/Con Thien area near the DMZ by using aircraft inserted four- or five-man "Stingray" reconnaissance team. The 4th Reg, 3d Mar Div provided the ground forces supported by MAG-16 and 190th AVN CO helicopters. PRAIRIE followed HASTINGS and was initiated by one battalion left behind from that operation to keep track of the NVA 324B Div. Like HASTINGS, this operation maintained a command and logistics base at Dong Ha but the artillery and forward units were at Cam Lo. The resulting action lasts until 31 January 1967. The allies claim 1,397 known enemy casualties.
