Operation DECKHOUSE IV
Quang Tri Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Description: Operation DECKHOUSE IV was conducted by the SLF as an adjunct to operation PRAIRIE. The area was about 8 miles NE of Dong Ha in I Corps. One company and some artillery made an amphibious landing while HMM-363 lifted two companies six miles inland, west of Highway 1. About 1330, a reconn team made contact with an NVA company. During the first attempt to extract this team, five helicopters were hit and two crewmen wounded. After artillery and air strikes were applied, the second attempt was successful. Several companies were inserted into the area and continued to work this contact. DECKHOUSE IV officially ended on the 18th, but the BLT stayed in support of PRAIRIE until the 25th. The operation claimed at least 200 NVA killed at a cost of 36 US KIA and 167 US WIA.
