operation report information
for MAG-16

From date 660922 to 661005

MAG-16 was a US Marine Corps unit
Primary service involved, US Marine Corps
Operation PRAIRIE
South Vietnam
Description: As part of operation PRAIRIE, MAG-16 CH-46s inserted a Marine battalion 4,500 meters east of the Nui Cay Tre ridgeline. The next day they started up the ridge itself. UH-34s were able to resupply only after the engineers used chain saws and axes to clear a small area. The NVA was well organized on this ridgeline. It took several days for the battalion to climb and take Hill 400 and several more to take Hill 484. It was during this action the CPT James J. Carroll died of friendly fire. The artillery base west of Cam Lo was renamed Camp Carroll in his honor. This ridgeline cost the Marine 20 dead and the NVA at least 100. It would be known as "Mutter" Ridge, after the radio call sign used by the Marine battalion during this action.
