Operation FRANCIS MARION
Pleiku Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Description: The 1st & 2d Bdes, 4th Inf Div, with the attached 3d Be 25th Inf Div, mounted guarding operations along the Cambodian border in Pleiku Province against the NVA 1st and 10th Divs that claimed 1,203 known enemy casualties. FRANCIS MARION followed SAM HOUSTON and, upon termination, combined forces with GREELEY to begin MAC ARTHUR. The 1st Brigade covered the area from Duc Co north toward Plei Djereng while the 2d Brigade worked south of Duc Co through the Ia Drang Valley. This frontier guard duty turned out to be arduous and costly but did stifle NVA attempts to cross large forces into Vietnam through that area during most of 1967. Before it ended the 4th would fight eight hard battles. The 3d Bde, 25th Inf departed the operation in mid-April to join Task Force Oregon. In late May, the 173d Abn would be attached to the 4th Inf and join this operation.
