Operation BEACON STAR
South Vietnam
Description: Just returning from a one month rehabilitation period on Okinawa, this was the first operation for SLF Bravo (Task Group 79.5) into an area on the boarder of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Provinces. HMM-164 supported this SLF. The operation when quietly, except for the heat, until the 26th. The landing battalion was extracted by helicopters to Phu Bai, then moved by Marine and USAF C-130s to Khe Sanh, linked up with the resident Marine Bn and made contact - all in seven hours! Thus phase II of Beacon Star is more commonly known as "The Khe Sanh Hill Fights."
