operation report information
for 9 MARINES

From date 670427 to 670428

9 MARINES was a US Marine Corps unit
Primary service involved, US Marine Corps
Operation PRAIRIE IV
Quang Tri Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Camp Carroll
Description: The official USMC history states that during Prairie IV and in conjunction with the heavy fighting around Khe Sanh, the enemy stepped up activity to the east. They cut Route 9 between Cam Lo and Khe Sanh repeatedly in an effort to isolate the Marines in that area. In consort with this effort, the NVA attacked the installations at Gio Linh, Camp Carroll, and Dong Ha with mortars, rockets, and artillery. The period 27-28 April was particularly savage. About 850 rounds of artillery, plus 200 mortar rounds blasted Gio Linh while more than 50 140mm rockets hits Dong Ha.
