Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, southwest of Dak To
Description: A ten man element consisting of two Americans and eight CIDG from the Dak To SF camp was destroyed by the 24th NVA Regt about 1400 meters southwest of their camp. Early on the 17th, the Dak To camp was pounded by a heavy mortar barrage and the HQ of the 42d ARVN Regt at Tan Canh was also hit by mortars and 122mm rockets. These actions signalled that the NVA were preparing for a major attack in this area. This was the beginning of the Battle of Dak To. The 4th Inf Div would reply by having the 173d Abn Bde mount operation GREELEY.
