Dinh Tuong Province, IV Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Cam Son
Description: As part of CORONADO V, the 2d, 3d, and 5th/60th plus the 3/47th Inf Bn from the Mobile Riverine Force, 9th Inf Div fight a two-day battle along the Rach Ba Rai, 2-4 miles northeast of Cai Be against the 263d MF and the 514th LF Bns. The 3/60th Inf on the 11th River Assault Squadron move 11 miles north on the Rach Ba Rai to two landing areas on the east bank. They are ambushed enroute on the river but finally reach that landing areas on their second attempt. The 5/60th move overland from the northeast to complete the top of a box they hope contains the enemy units. The 3/47th lands at two points about 5 miles south of the 3/60th on the RRach Ba Rai and push east and north as the southern part of the box. The 2/60th conducts a CA to block the southeast side of the box. After landing, the 3/60th attacks to the southeast while the 5/60th to the southwest; both against tough enemy resistance. They link up by early afternoon. An ARVN Bn is inserted on the west side of the river behind the ambush point. By nightfall the four US battalions are unable to overcome all the VC resistance and they establish NDPs. Air and artillery illumination work the night. There is a flurry of fire between 0200 and 0400, but the VC slip away. The sweeps continue the next day but met only token resistance. Losses were: 16 U.S. KIAs and 146 WIAs, 213 VC KIAs.
