Operation LUCKY LEAF
South Vietnam
Description: This was the JPRC's first attempt to rescue the famous POW, 1LT Nich Rowe. The 135th MI at Can Tho had interviewed a Vietnamese escapee from a prison camp where two Americans were held. The 5th SF Group was tasked to run the raid and the 9th Inf. Div. had a battalion to act as a reaction force. Planning began in late August.
On 2 Oct., the Special Force team was launched into the area and search of 36 hours. No camp was found. The Vietnamese was flown over the area in an attempt to locate the camp site. Four different locations were pointed out by the source, all of which had ben previously searched by the Special Force. It became obvious that the source could not locate the camp.
