Attack on Muong Phalane information

For date 671225

South Vietnam
Location, Muong Phalane
Description: One of four USAF TACAN sites in Laos. Officially it was an 'Air America communications facility.' It is believed the NVA attacked this site because they feared it might be supporting air counterattacks against NVA troops in the central and southern part of South Vietnam during the upcoming Tet Offensive. There was a precision mortar barrage followed immediately by an infantry assault. Two American Lockheed Corp technicians were killed and most of the structures were destroyed; but the TACAN equipment was not damaged! The Royal Lao Army recaptured the city and the TACAN site.
