C/7/17 CAV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Quang Tin Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Chu Lai
Description: C/7/17 Cav's unit history reports that from Dec 4th to the end of the month they were in direct support of the 196th LIB, Americal Div. From their base at Chu Lai, C Troop established a forward base daily to support the LIB's search and destroy operation. For this period C Troop reported 68 enemy KIA's, 117 possible enemy KIA's, 12 enemy WIA's, 6 weapons CIA's, 33 detainees, 147 sampans destroyed, 20 structures destroyed. Their aircraft were fired on 31 times and hit 9. Their Blues were employed only in very selective areas throughout the AO. This selective employment was due primarily to the numerically superior NVA forces reported in the area. The Blues were given 3 downed aircraft security mission and were employed a total of 17 times to conduct snatch operations that netted a total of 31 detainees, 3 of which have been classified as POW's. (Due to slowness of IPW readouts, the exact number of POW's can not be determined.) The platoon was committed a total of 12 times as a platoon to conduct detailed reconnaissance of specified areas. Results were 3 KIA's and an abundance of enemy equipment captured. Two tactical air strikes were requested and flown.
