Operation KLAMATH FALLS
Ninh Thuan Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Phan Rang
Description: Provided for the location and destruction of HQ MR6 and opening QL-1 from Phan Rang to the II/III Corps boundary. It involved elements of the 1st Bde, 101st Abn, based at Phan Rang; the TF 2/7th Cav, 1st Cav, based at Phan Thiet; the 23d ARVN Div and Co B, 5th SF Group. To support KLAMATH FALLS, TF 2/7th Cav officially suspended its involvement in BYRD but continued to work the same OA. During December, contact with the enemy was light but judging from the numerous large base camps and rice caches discovered, it was obvious that US forces had entered a well-prepared base area. The enemy continued to avoid decisive engagement with US forces during January. Casualties: Allies 28 KIA, 138 WIA; Enemy 156 KIA, 11 POW, 74 SA and 3 crew served weapons captured.
