Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "199th Bde Flying CO Kills Cong" dated 13 Jan 1968. A sharpshooting battalion commander of the 199th LIB, flying in a command helicopter above elements of his unit on a recent search-and-sweep operation, killed a VC. The VC had wounded an American point man only moments earlier. LTC William S. Schroeder, commander of the 4/12th Inf, witnessed the wounding of one of his men and shot the enemy sniper as he emerged from the thick brush in which he had been hiding. Schroeder then called in a medical evacuation helicopter to rescue the wounded infantryman who had fallen down a 15-foot river at water-top level and under fire, picked up the wounded man and evacuated him to a hospital. Meanwhile elements of Company C were engaging a VC squad in a fire fight in the immediate area that resulted in 5 VC killed, 4 enemy suspects detained and several submachineguns and rifles captured.
