Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "One Of A Kind 34th Provides Avn Support" dated 27 Jan 1968. When the 34th GS Grp was formed two years ago, it became the only unit of its kind in the United States Army. This aviation unit provides maintenance support for all 3500 Army aircraft in Vietnam and supports many helicopters and fixed wing aircraft of the various Free World Forces now in the combat theater. Units of the 34th Grp blanket the entire country. The 14th TC Bn in Nha Trang is responsible for all aircraft maintenance in the I and II Corps Area. The 520th TC Bn supports the northern half of III Corps from its headquarters in Phu Loi, and the 765th TC Bn in Vung Tau supports all IV Corps and the southern half of II Corps. To ensure that up-to-date procedures are utilized, the 34th Grp has established the Army Aviation Maintenance Training Assistance Program (AAMTAP) School at the 765th TC Bn headquarters in Vung Tau. At the school, aircraft mechanics from all over Vietnam receive updating and refresher courses in such areas as armament, airframe, engine repair, and other aviation and supply related fields. The 34th also is charged with the missions of processing all incoming new aircraft to the theater; preparing for retrograde shipment of all those outbound; recovery of all crash and battle damaged aircraft and their evacuation to group maintenance facilities. The recovery of downed aircraft and subsequent repair has resulted in the savings of millions of dollars.
