B-42 SF DET was a US Army unit
ST-2 was a US Navy unit
Chau Doc Province, IV Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Chau Doc
Description: The small groups of VC who infiltrated key locations within the city were opposed by some of the roughest allied combatants in Vietnam who had been posted there for special missions. Det B-42 of the Army Special Forces, leading an indigenous provincial reconnaissance unit (PRU) for Project PHOENIX, and a Navy SEAL platoon made up the core of the allied force. The fighting heavily damaged the city and their were mass civilian casualties, but the VC were totally destroyed after four days. The SEALs and PRU were inserted by PBRs before dawn on the 31st. While on patrol about 0200, they detected the massing of enemy forces near the city. Vastly outnumbered, the friendly force withdrew to report. The enemy force estimated at 1,400 attacked at 0310 with the plan to cut the city into small pieces to be destroyed individually. The SEALs helped rescue the U.S. AID and CORDS personnel then joined with the SF to finish this battle.
