Description: The MAG-16 command chronology reported operations in the Chu Lai area were normal. In the Da Nang TAOR one HMM-265 CH-46A was hit BT073515, no injuries; one VMO-2 UH-1E was hit at AT989597, no injuries. Attempts were made again to recover the downed CH-46A but the first attempt was unsuccessful when one of the recovery aircraft took intensive fire in the zone and lost one engine. The pilot tried to fly the aircraft back to MMAF but lost the other engine on the way and made a successful autorotative landing. This aircraft was recovered by an Army CH-54. Later in the day a recovery team was inserted at the sight of the first downed aircraft and it was stripped down.
