Description: B/7/17 Cav entered the AO at 0904 for a joint insertion of A and B Troop Blues plus D Troop at 0930. At 1015, slightly before the insertion was complete, the ground element and lift ships in the area received light AW fire from all 4 quadrants of the LZ. One gun position was observed and taken under fire resulting in 1 NVA KIA. The ground element started to sweep through a suspected NVA base camp. They found numerous pots and pans, captured 12 land-mines, 78mm mortar rounds, 12 claymores, 7 75mm RR rounds, 3,200 rounds of AK-47 ammo, 7 boxes of hand grenades, and one B-40 rocket launcher. At 1520, a coordinated effort between the aerial and ground elements netted 2 NVA KIA's, 2 NVA POW's, 2 AK-47's and 1 7.62 ChiCom pistol. The ground element was extracted and an airstrike employed on the area northwest of Plei Mrong which destroyed a rocket position that had been firing on Plei Mrong sporadically throughout the day. The rocket position was silenced but the Troop was unable to perform a BDA due to impending darkness.
