Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, south of Dak To
Description: The 4th Inf Div's Operation MACARTHUR reported that a patrol from C/3/12th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Div was operating out of FSB 5. While climbing a hill, their point man disappeared and they contact was made with 10 NVA. The Battalion Commander, in his C&C ship, was looking for this man when he observed one NVA crouched on a trail at YB963170 and some 122mm rockets in firing position. Gunships from the 7/17th Cav strafed the targets. A second position was sighted approximately 150 meters past the first and before fire could be called in, 10 to 20 rockets were fired at Dak To. All the rockets landed outside the perimeter. Artillery and 106mm RR fire were placed on the target and the firing ceased. Nine unexpended rockets and 4 NVA dead were found in the sweep. During that night, two NVA companies from the D-120 Sapper Bn attacked a Camp Strike Force company on Hill 990, YB818247. In ten minutes they overran the position and killed or wounded most of the CSF.
