Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "101st renames chopper pad for heroic pilot" dated 12 Oct 1968. A monument was recently dedicated at the 159th ASHB heliport here in honor of a heroic pilot. He gave his life while flying a dangerous mission into the A Shau Valley in support of 101st Abn Div operations there. The battalion landing pad was renamed "Rhodes Heliport" in honor of CWO Hubert B. Rhodes, who volunteered to fly a mission into the valley on May 24. His mission was to attempt to extract many sophisticated enemy weapons which had been captured by elements of the 1st Bde, 101st Abn Div. They were needed for intelligence data. He was fatally wounded by heavy small arms fire while attempting to extract the first load of captured weapons. Rhodes was awarded posthumously the DFC and a PH.
