Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "150-Ton Salt Catch Keeps VC Sweating." Chu Lai (IO) - In the hot tropics of Vietnam, salt can be as important as ammunition to an army in wartime. So when "Charlie" loses a 150-ton supply of salt, it hurts. The latest large-scale captures of Communist salt came at two places in the Americal Div.'s 11th Inf. Brigade's area. The first haul was found by Aero Scouts of B/123rd Avn Bn during a combat assault on the Batangan Peninsula northeast of Quang Ngai City. The "Warlords" discovered 45 tons of salt and a processing plant on the coast. B/4/3rd Inf. uncovered another 41,000 pounds three days later during a sweep of the same area. The units spent three days loading the salt into sandbags and moving it by helicopter. In all, over 5,000 bags were recovered. Meanwhile, troops of the 4/21st Inf., discovered 85 tons of salt stockpiled on the shore of the South China Sea 10 miles southeast of Duc Pho. The salt has been turned over to the government of Vietnam for distribution to refugees in Southern Quang Ngai Province.
