Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 8 June 1968 issue. Soldiers of the 25th Inf Div killed 218 VC in a 20-hour battle one mile west of Saigon. The action near Saigon began at 11 p.m. when units of the 4/23rd Inf began receiving small arms, rocket and mortar fire. The U.S. forces responded with helicopter gunships, tactical aircraft and artillery. Contact was made again at 3:30 a.m. and continued throughout the day. When the action was broken off at 7 p.m., U.S. forces counted 218 enemy dead in the area. In earlier reconnaissance-in-force missions 88 enemy soldiers were killed by units of the 25th participating in Operation Toan Thang. Moments after midnight, the location of the 1/5th Inf came under enemy fire. The 3rd Brigade soldiers returned the fire and killed 34 VC. At about the same time, the 1st Brigade basecamp just west of Tay Ninh began receiving mortar and small arms fire. Heavy fighting ensued. When the enemy broke contact they left 32 VC bodies behind. In other action two troops of the 3/4th Cav killed 22 VC in a day-long battle.
