4 INF DIV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Ben Het
Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 8 June 1968 issue. Two companies of the 1/8th Inf were attacked at Fire Base 29 near Ben Het by an estimated two enemy battalions. The enemy force moved towards the fire base from a ravine located southwest of the U.S. camp. Throughout the night they fired mortars and recoilless rifle rounds into the camp and then followed with a ground attack. Four bunkers on the camp's perimeter were overrun during the early hours of fighting but were resecured by the U.S. forces. Seventy-five enemy bodies were found in a sweep of the area the next day. An NVA force attacked a division convoy traveling north on Highway 14 from Pleiku to Kontum. The enemy fired small arms, mortars and rockets from both sides of the road. Cavalrymen from the 3rd ARVN Cavalry quickly moved into the area and supported by artillery and gunships, repulsed the attack. Fifteen NVA soldiers were killed in the contact and one suspect was detained. The 2/1st Cav sweeping an area of an earlier action WNW of Dak To found 11 more enemy bodies bringing the total for that action to 47.
