Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "17th Cavalry Seeks, Finds Mt Complex" dated 8 June 1968. In a joint Troop effort the 7/17th Air Cav sought out another large enemy stronghold in the mountains NW of Kontum recently. Of the 450 bunkers sighted, 50 per cent had been vacated within the last 24 hours and many others were still occupied by elements of the NVA brigade that had been operating out of the huge complex. Other fortifications spotted in the stronghold by the aerial scout teams included 500-600 feet of trenches, 50 foxholes, 4 hootches plus 2 mortar, 2 AA and 2 rocket positions. Recon by fire was conducted by helicopter crews from both A and B Troops. They received some automatic weapons and 50-cal AA fire from scattered enemy positions throughout the area. One of the AA guns was destroyed along with a lone NVA soldier caught in the area. The gunships and LOHs killed three other NVA soldiers during this phase of the operation. The two aerial troops then flew in 36 ground scouts from the Squadron's D Troop. The infantrymen, under the command of CPT Anthony X. Hoyer, destroyed the other AA gun, as well as 15 bunkers, all of which had been abandoned by the enemy when tactical air strikes were called in earlier. Before being extracted the scout platoon captured an assortment of equipment which included a variety of rocket parts intended for the maintenance of the rocket launching sites destroyed in the air strikes. Mini-gun and rocket strikes were made on the entire area by the 7/17th Cav helicopters repeatedly during the operation. Several air strike and artillery shellings were also called in.
