Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Long Hot Summer Americal Captures Enemy Salt" dated 8 June 1968. In a hot tropical country such as Vietnam, salt can be as important as ammunition to an army in wartime. So when Charlie loses a supply of salt to the tune of 150 tons or more, it hurts. The latest large-scale capture of enemy salt supplies came in two separate places in the 11th LIB's AOs recently. The first haul was found by aero scouts from B/123d Avn Bn during a CA on the Batangan Peninsula NE of Quang Ngai City. They discovered 45 tons of salt and a processing plant along the coast. B/4/3d Inf uncovered an additional 41,000 pounds three days later during a sweep of the same area. The two units spent three days loading the salt into sand bags and evacuating it by helicopter. In all, over 5,000 bags were recovered. Meanwhile troops of the 4/21st Inf cornered their share of the salt market when they discovered 85 tons of salt stockpiled on the shore of the South China Sea 10 miles SE of Duc Pho. CPT Winston Gouzoules, civil affairs officer, underscored the importance of the capture in commenting. "There are no salt mines in Vietnam, and the only source of it is salt gathered along the seacoast by evaporating seawater. The usable salt has been turned over to the GVN for distribution to refugees in southern Quang Ngai Province. This issue also carried a photo relating to the 23 Inf Div. The narrative reads: Dust flies as ships of the 174th AHC land to pick up the first wave of a CA by the 1/20th Inf. The infantrymen opened Operation Norfolk Victory for the Americal Division's 11th Inf Brigade. Photo by Sp4 Kevin Howe, Americal Div IO.
