Description: The 361st AWC reported on this date the most significant engagement the two light fire teams from the third platoon had while under the operational control of the 10th CAB during the June and July period happened. At 1800H both fire teams were called out for a tactical emergency declared by members of the 23d ARVN Div located about five miles northwest of Phan Thiet. The mission commander arrived in the area and engaged the enemy positions. On the second pass over the target, every gunship received intense fire from a VC 'helicopter ambush.' As each ship broke away from the target area intense large caliber automatic weapons fire was received, hitting three gunships. LT Doehring lost a boot in the action when a round struck him just above the heel. All three birds managed to fly to Phan Thiet and land safely. Inspection revealed numerous holes in the blades, cockpit and fuselage.
