C/229 AHB 1 CAV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Quang Tri Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Description: Copter Booby Trap Spurs Quick Takeoff QUANG TRI, Vietnam (Special) - "I thought I saw something from the corner of my eye," Spec. 4 Henry Yurin said. It was then that Yurin, the door gunner from C Co., 229th Aviation Bn., spotted the grenade under his ship. The trip wire and the pin lay next to the armed grenade. "The primary job of the door gunner is to see that the right side of the ship is clear," said Yurin. "When I looked down I saw the wire and pin, and then I saw the grenade. The line troops had already been loaded on the ship, and I called to the pilot to get out, that there was a live grenade under the ship. "I guess he didn't understand what I was talking about right away. I got out of the ship and felt around down by the grenade. It was lying on the its handle, which is why it hadn't blown." Yurin grabbed the grenade, trip wire and all, and running, threw it. By this time his ship was airborne. "I don't know how far I ran with the thing," Yurin said. "I just stumbled around in the rice paddy for a few feet, and threw it. It seemed like a long time before it went off."
