Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "BAR Provides Fun, Games for Aviators" dated 3 Aug 1968. Every Sunday, soldiers of the 1st Avn Bn, 1st Inf Div and E/701st Mnt Bn are invited to the Battalion Activities and Recreation (BAR). The men of the 701st are included because they help with the maintenance on choppers flown by the aviators. The BAR idea was conceived by LTC William W. Cole, commander of the 1st Avn Bn. Cole wanted his men to be able to relax, and what better way than by playing sports like baseball, basketball and volleyball. CPT Joseph Dimino, the activities and recreation officer, commented, "The teams are not limited to the required number of players. For example, in baseball, the men are rotated in the game so everybody has a chance to play." The program will be expanding soon to include a craft shop. There, men will practice their favorite hobbies from oil painting to building scale models.
