Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 147 September 14 CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Action increased in the Americal Division's southern I Corps Tactical Zone yesterday as Division forces and supporting elements accounted for 63 VC and 11 NVA killed, 12 individual and four crew-served weapons captured. Action increased sharply in Operation Champaign Grove yesterday as elements of the 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav's "Dragoons" and supporting elements accounted for 45 VC and seven NVA killed, 12 individual and four crew-served weapons captured. "C" Troop and "B" Troop, 1st Sqdn. 1st Armored Cav. engaged an unknown sized enemy force late yesterday about five miles southwest of Quang Ngai City. "C" Troop accounted for 42 VC killed, seven AK-47 rifles, one 7.62mm pistol, and one RPG-7, and one RPG-2 captured. "B" Troop accounted for three VC killed. "Professionals" of a 1st Bn., 46th Inf. company under operational control of the 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav., killed seven NVA, captured four AK-47 rifles, and two RPG-2s yesterday about five miles west of Quang Ngai City. 11th Inf. Bde. soldiers and supporting helicopter gunships reported 15 VC and four NVA killed and six suspects detained yesterday in southern and western Quang Ngai Province. "Aero Scouts" gunships from the 123d Avn. Bn. killed five VC and four NVA soldiers while supporting "Jungle Warriors" of the 11th Inf. Bde. in Operation Champaign Grove west of Quang Ngai City. "Old Guard" soldiers from a 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company commanded by CPT Jimmy R. Davis (Denton, TX) continued to search the area where they had found a complete 105mm howitzer Thursday. Yesterday they uncovered 100 rounds of M-60 ammunition, one B-40 rocket, assorted NVA and khaki uniforms, and enemy documents in a small tunnel nine miles west of Quang Ngai City. The "Old Guard" soldiers later killed nine VC in the same area. In the Duc Pho area 1st Bn., 20 Inf. soldiers killed one VC yesterday morning and recovered his pistol belt and two grenades while conducting a combat sweep 13 miles north of LZ Bronco. The two 18-year-old Montagnards who led a 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company to a buried 105mm howitzer near Quang Ngai Thursday, each received 25,000 piasters yesterday as part of the Voluntary Informant Program. Presentation was made yesterday afternoon at LZ Buff northwest of Quang Ngai City by the 4th Bn. 3d Inf. commander, LTC Albert L. Russell (Philadelphia, PA) and CPT Davis. "Charger" units of the 196th Inf. Bde. killed three VC in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa yesterday. A 3d Bn., 31st Inf. company engaged three evading VC with small arms fire 21 miles west of Tam Ky, killing one VC. The Reconnaissance Platoon of the 4th Bn., 21st Inf. killed one VC yesterday in an area centered eight miles southwest of Hoi An. In the same vicinity another company of the battalion killed another VC. Several 198th Inf. Bde. units reported sniper and intermittent small arms fire throughout a day of scattered and light engagements yesterday. Bde. infantrymen conducting sweeps around Chu Lai and in Operation Burlington Trail detained two enemy suspects yesterday. "Brave and Bold" Civic Action soldiers and medics treated 97 Vietnamese yesterday during three MEDCAPS. Division forces suffered four soldiers killed and 28 wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.
