Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 155 September 21 CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Action was light and scattered in the Americal Division's southern I Corps Zone yesterday as Division forces killed 11 VC, captured one NVA soldier, and captured one crew-served and 13 individual weapons. "Charger" units of the 196th Inf. Bde. killed five VC in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa yesterday. "F" Trp., 17th Cav. killed one VC with .50 cal. machine gun fire yesterday 15 miles northwest of Tam Ky. A 2d Bn., 1st Inf. company killed one evading VC with small arms fire 17 miles west of Tam Ky. In the same area the command and control helicopter of the 2d Bn., 1st Inf. engaged and killed one VC. The recon. plt. of the 4th Bn., 21st Inf. engaged and killed one VC with small arms fire seven miles south of Hoi An. A 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company engaged and killed one evading VC with small arms fire nine miles south of Hoi An yesterday. "Brave and Bold" soldiers of the 198th Inf. Bde. and supporting units killed three VC, captured one NVA, and one crew-served and 13 individual weapons during scattered contacts in their area of operations yesterday. A 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company captured one NVA while searching an area west of Tam Ky. A further probe of the area produced an enemy weapons cache containing four M-16 rifles, five M-14 rifles, one shot gun, two AK-47 rifles, and one RPG-7. 'Aero Scouts' of the 123d Avn. Bn. flying over the area being searched by the 1st Bn., 52d Inf. spotted one VC. The enemy was engaged and killed. Later they found on M-1 carbine in the same vicinity. The recon. plt. of the 5th Bn., 46th Inf. led by 1LT William G. Mullen (Falmouth, MA) killed one evading VC southwest of Chu Lai yesterday afternoon. Bn. received small arms fire from a group of VC yesterday afternoon northwest of Chu Lai The 'Scouts' returned fire, killing one VC. Civic Action soldiers of the 198th Bde. treated 153 Vietnamese during four MEDCAPs yesterday. Light enemy contact in the 11th Inf. Bde's. area of operations resulted in three VC killed and 10 suspects detained. Soldiers of a 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company killed two VC and detained five suspects in separate actions near Duc Pho. The "Old Guard" soldiers spotted some VC throwing hand grenades from a tunnel. "Old Guard" soldiers returned fire killing one VC. One suspect was detained in that action. The exchange took place six miles north of Duc Pho. The troops later killed another VC near a village eight miles northwest of Duc Pho. The 'Old Guard' command and control helicopter detained four suspects in separate actions near a trail and huts two and three miles northwest of Duc Pho yesterday. Gunships of "F" Trp., 8th Cav. killed an evading VC wearing a khaki uniform and detained one evading suspect in separate actions near the Tra Khuc River 15 miles southwest of Quang Ngai City. The 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported no contacts in their area of operations yesterday. Division forces suffered two soldiers killed and five wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.
