Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 162 September 28 CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - In light scattered enemy contacts yesterday 11 VC were reported killed and eight individual and five crew-served weapons captured by units of the Americal Division in the southern portion of I Corps Tactical Zone. Light action in the 11th Inf. Bde's area of operations yesterday resulted in two VC suspects detained and one individual weapon recovered. Yesterday morning a Vietnamese civilian turned an M-79 grenade launcher over to soldiers of the 4th Bn., 3d Inf. under the VIP program. In afternoon action, troops of a 3d Bn., 1st Inf. company detained two male VC suspects of military age without ID cards. The two suspects were detained near a trail 14 miles north of Duc Pho. Ten VC were reported killed by "Charger" units of the 196th Inf. Bde. yesterday in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa. In an area nine miles west of Tam Ky yesterday, a 3d Bn., 21st Inf. company spotted a group of evading VC. The "Gimlets" engaged the group with small arms and M-79 fire, killing two VC. In the same area another 3d Bn., 21st Inf. company engaged and killed one VC fleeing from a hut. Another 3d Bn., 21st Inf. "Gimlets" company observed an evading VC 11 miles west of Tam Ky. The unit engaged the VC with small arms fire, resulting in one VC killed. An OP of the 2d Bn., 1st Inf. spotted a group of VC evading 12 miles northwest of Tam Ky. The "Guardians" called an artillery mission, killing three VC. Near the same site, the Op spotted another group of VC evading to the west. The "Guardians" again called artillery, resulting in one VC killed. The recon. plt. of the 4th Bn. 21st Inf, OPCON to the 196th Inf. Bde., in two separate incidents nine miles south of Hoi An, engaged and killed two VC yesterday. Action was scattered yesterday in Operation Burlington Trail, 198th Inf. Bde. "Brave and Bold" soldiers reported one VC killed and five crew-served and seven individual weapons captured. Troops of a 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company led by 1LT Michael J. Deal (Arlington, VA) searching the area of Friday's reported contact 11 miles west of Tam Ky, found the following weapons and equipment: two 82mm mortar tubes, one 60mm mortar, two RPG launchers, six AK-47 rifles, 43 82mm and six 60mm mortar rounds, 15 Chicom grenades, 23 field packs with food, one field telephone and commo wire, one RPG cleaning kit, four NVA helmets, 12 AK-47 magazines, and an assortment of military documents. While returning to their fire base west of Tam Ky, the "Ready Rifles" spotted a VC running across a rice paddy. The 1st Bn., 52d Inf. soldiers opened fire, killing one VC. Another 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company found one .38 cal. pistol eight miles southwest of Tam Ky. Civic Action soldiers of the Bde., treated 885 Vietnamese civilians yesterday during 14 MEDCAPs. "Dragoons" of the 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported one VC suspect detained yesterday seven miles northwest of Tam Ky. Seven Americal Division soldiers were reported killed and seven wounded and evacuated for medical treatment as a result of action yesterday.
