23 INF DIV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Quang Nam Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Que Son
Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Soldiers help villagers Dream of dispensary fulfilled" dated 28 Sep 1968. With the Americal Div's help the people of Que Son Village are drawing closer to realizing their dreams, their own full-time doctor and dispensary. A self-help program set up by the 2/1st Inf is bringing the first step of that dream closer to reality. "As soon as we can provide a hospital, we can ask a doctor to come to work and live in Que Son. He'll probably have to come from Da Nang, Hue or Saigon, so we have to have something to offer him," explained MAJ Franklin L. Donahoe. Presently the people of Que Son have produced over 8,000 clay bricks for the proposed 8-room dispensary. We have a close working relationship with the men on LZ Ross," said MAJ Donahoe, senior advisor for Que Son District. "The assistance from their Civil Affairs section has accelerated our program 100 per cent." In an overcrowded village with 10,000 refugees to feed and support, the main support being given by the battalion is food. "We supply Que Son District with all the good captured VC/NVA rice we find in our operations," said 1LT Roger Muloc, battalion civil affairs officer. "In turn, it is used as wages for the workers for their self-help program." For those who cannot work, the rice is distributed by the sandbag load while the battalion surgeon runs a regular MEDCAP. This is what the program is all about - to help these people rebuild their lives, their government and their nation.
